Wedding Cake Sugar Flowers – Peonies Gluten Free

With their beautiful thick ruffled blooms, peonies make stunning decorations for wedding cakes. Peonies symbolise romance, honour, wealth and beauty so it’s no surprise it is a particularly popular choice with brides.  If you would like to learn how to make your own sugar peonies see our step-by-step methods below for beginners as well as, professional cake decorators. You can also pop in to our sugar cake decorating supplies shop, Solihull, Birmingham, West midlands and speak to our friendly cake decorating staff who will be able to advise you on, how to make sugar flowers

FMM’s Easiest Peony Cutter is the perfect way to create beautiful and realistic sugar peonies. This fantastic cake decorating cutter is simple to use and will help you create beautiful sugar flowers in various different sizes for any wedding cake, birtday cake or celebration cake design.

You will need:
White Modelling Paste-100g
Cake Decorating Sugarpaste Icing-Brilliant White-250g
Gel Food Colour of choice if required
FMM Easiest Peony and Leaf Cutter
9” Rolling Pin
PME Flower Foam Pad
Green Non-Stick Board 10” x 7”
Ball Tool
Edible Glue-17ml
Brush for gluing
FMM Dab-a-Dust

To create your paste you can use equal quantities of sugar paste and modelling paste together, or simply use sugar flower paste. Knead well and add colour if required. Make a ball of paste which, when measured against a petal in the small cutter, fits well inside it. Elongate the ball slightly.

Roll paste out very thinly and cut out two shapes with the smaller cutter, and two shapes with the larger cutter. Working on the smaller pieces first, thin the petal edges all round with either the ball tool, or the end of the rolling pin. Then, using either of these tools, ball each petal to curve inwards – do this along one side, then turn paste over and ball the second side. This will ensure that all the petals curve inwards the same way.

Brush a line of glue along the length of the paste just above the centre. Fold in half lengthwise and brush another line of glue along the bottom edge. Roll up around the ball, starting the roll as tightly as possible. Take the second small piece and repeat the process. Repeat with the two larger pieces. This will give you a reasonably large peony, but you may add more pieces until you have the size required.

Sugar flowers are also suitable if your wedding cake is a gluten free wedding cake or a vegan birthday cake, an eggless wedding cake or a vegan wedding cake.

Eggless Wedding Cakes & Vegan Wedding Cakes

royal-iced-wedding-cakeEggless Wedding Cakes & Vegan Wedding Cake Flavours by Sugarbliss Cake Company, Solihull, Birmingham, West Midlands.

Choosing your wedding cake flavours is one of the most important – and most fun – decisions that a bride and groom will make and should reflect their big day’s theme and style. When choosing your cake flavours and including any dietary requirements, should be one of the first things to do when deciding on your overall wedding cake design.

Although many of the traditional wedding cake flavours are suitable for almost any wedding cake design, if you are choosing an Eggless wedding cake or a vegan wedding cake you must check with your wedding cake designer if there are any wedding cake designs which would not be suitable using these flavours.

Eggless and Vegan cake recipes do not have as much strength as a typically baked sponge cake and require much more support and careful planning. This may effect the overall size or shape of your wedding cake especially if your wedding cake design is shaped in any way.

eggless-semi-naked-wedding-cakeOne such design which is perfect for eggfree wedding cake and vegan wedding cake designs are the popular semi naked wedding cakes. These stunning rustic looking cakes can simply have added to them sugar flowers or fresh fruit/fresh flowers to adorn the tops of these stunning wedding cake designs.

If you are interested in our delicious eggless wedding cake or vegan wedding cakes , please contact us or why not simply order one of our sample boxes to fry our eggfree or vegan cake flavours.

Making sugar roses is surprisingly easy and gives you that extra bit of flexibility to create your own custom rose size, colour and design that complements your cake perfectly.

We have a fantastic range of readymade sugar roses available at our Sugarbliss Cake Decorating Shop, Solihull, West Midlands but if you would like to learn a new skill and make your own then read on for our two handy step-by-step methods that have been put together to meet the needs of beginners as well as more experienced sugarcrafters.

FMM-VS-TRADITONAL (3)

Easy sugar roses method

The FMM Easiest Rose Cutter is the perfect way to create beautiful and realistic sugar roses, no matter what your skill level.

You will need:

FMM Easy Rose Cutter (81706)

Culpitt Edible Glue-17ml (5599)
Wilton Dust-N-Store Pouch (822489) optional
Stay Fresh Multi Mat-Small (83363) optional
Brush for gluing

Roses2

Create your paste by mixing equal quantities of the sugar paste and Cake Star modelling paste together, or simply using sugar flower paste. Knead well and colour using your choice of Colour Splash gel.

Roll the paste out very thinly and cut out with the Easiest Rose Ever cutter. Thin out the petal edges using the rolling pin on the foam pad.

Brush a line of glue along the length of the paste just above the centre.  Fold in half lengthwise and brush another line of glue along the bottom edge. Roll up to form a small rose, tweaking the petal edges to create a realistic look.

Repeat this process if you want a larger rose until you have the size required, shaping the petals as you go. You can also brush some deeper pink dusting powder into the centre and onto the petal edges to bring your rose to life!

Advanced sugar roses method

If you’re a more confident sugarcrafter then why not try making a sugar rose from scratch?

You will need:
Renshaw Flower and Modelling Paste-White- 250g (0601942)
Colour Splash Gel-Green Leaf 25g (0675078) and one in your choice of colour
Culpitt Rose Cutters-Set of 4 (84778)
Culpitt Calyx Cutter-Set of 3 (84783)
Culpitt 9” Rolling Pin (84788)
PME Flower Foam Pad (84632)
Green Non-Stick Board 10” x 7” (83440G)
Jem Petal Base-50g (JC150) or any white fat
Culpitt Edible Glue-17ml (5599)
Bone Tool from Cake Star Decorating Kit (0684797)
22gauge Dark Green Florist Wire – Pack of 20 (1385G)
Stemtex Tape-Nile Green (1490N)
Colour Splash Food Colouring Powder-Matt-Blush (75116)
Stay Fresh Multi Mat – Small (83363) optional
Brush for gluing

Roses1

Create your paste by mixing equal quantities of the sugar paste and Cake Star modelling paste together, or simply using sugar flower paste. Knead well and colour using your choice of Colour Splash gel.

Make a hook on the end of a 22g wire and glue this into a small cone of paste. Allow to dry before starting the rose.

Top Tip: if you are making a large rose, use a polystyrene bud instead of using paste for the centre cone – the rose will be much lighter to handle!

Roll out the paste very thinly – you can use the Jem Petal Base or white fat rubbed lightly on the board to prevent the paste from sticking.  Use one of the five-petal cutters from the set, ensuring the petals are large enough to cover the cone, and cut out the first shape.

Thin the edges of all the petals using the bone tool.  Brush glue over base of petals and place the first one over the cone, and petal three opposite. These form the centre of the rose. Take petals two, four and five and overlap them around the bud.

Cut out five more petal shapes, working on one whilst keeping the spare ones under the Stay Fresh mat to prevent them from drying out. Thin out the edges, add glue and push the centre onto the wire.  Push up and stick to the underside of the cone. Stick petals around the outside of the rose, overlapping each petal in turn, tweaking the petals for a realistic look. Repeat with more five petal shapes until you have created the size of rose you want. You may need to increase the size of the cutter you use for the outer petals if a very large rose is required. Allow to dry.

Enhance the finished look of the rose by dusting some Colour Splash dust in the centre and around the petal edges. Tape the stem for a more realistic finish.

wedding cake budget

With the average cost of a UK wedding soaring year by year it’s no surprise that brides are on the lookout for ways to stretch their budgets. With this in mind, we’ve pulled together our top tips and ideas to help you make the most of your wedding cake budget ready for your big day… At Sugarbliss Cake Company we also offer a beautiful collection of simple wedding cakes ideal for a smaller wedding reception or budget.

1. Move away from fruit cake

Although fruit cakes are a wedding tradition, not everyone one likes them and they tend to be an expensive option. Replacing a fruit cake tier with a chocolate, lemon or vanilla sponge will save you money and give your guests a delicious alternative. If you’re looking for a spectacular centrepiece but don’t have lots of guests, using a cake dummy instead of a fruit cake will save you money and cut down on waste.

2. Downsize your centre piece

If you’ve set your heart on a particular style of cake but your budget won’t stretch that far then you could opt to have a cake with fewer tiers. A plain sheeted cake in the kitchen will cut down on decorating time and provide the extra portions.

3. Keep it simple

A professional cake maker will spend many hours creating an intricately decorated cake. Choosing a cake with simpler decorations or asking your cake maker about alternative styles that are quicker and easier to make can be a great way to spread you budget.

4. Smaller slices

Standard cake portion sizes are 1”x 1” for fruit cake and 1”x 2” for sponge cake. You’ll struggle to cut your fruit cake tiers smaller, but can increase your servings by offering 1”x 1” portions of sponge cake too.

5. Make your own

If you’re confident in your cake decorating skills and love the idea of adding a personal touch to your special day, making your own cake can be a cost effective solution. If you’re considering this option you need to be realistic about what you can achieve and whether you’re going to have the time. Be sure to check in advance that your venue is okay with this too. If you are making your own cake we suggest you keep it simple and definitely don’t attempt anything you haven’t tried before. Using readymade decorations is a great time saver – handmade edible decorations like SugarSoft® roses not only look beautiful but taste great too.

You can check out our top tips for making your own wedding cake here.

6. Respect your budget… and your cake maker

Budgets are there for a reason and it’s important that you do your best to stick to them. If you have hired a professional to make your cake then be upfront with them about your exact budget when you talk about the cake you would like. This’ll help them use their professional expertise to come up with ideas and sketches of what you can realistically be achieved with the budget you have available. Be prepared to compromise if your budget is very tight and you’ve set your heart on an elaborate cake.
